a shiny picture disco for slow motion records release number 7 - disco wizard by francisco from jolly music. beamed from distant satellites via 1983 and picked up by a crack team of berlin based italian disco commandoes, the disco wizard brings to mind space, the tougher end of pre-84 italo, guys with beards and grace jones and amanda lear dancing the night away. a nagging baseline propels the track forward with alternating male and female vocals that coo and tease, whilst twinkling refrain evokes the giogio morders classic >the chase<. on the flip side the dub mix strips away most of the vocals and injects some serious strut into the beats. the rougher, tougher cousin of the original to send the boys and girls wild with cosmic desire. you have been warned.

pole recordings reaches its number 10 release, a work by oscar mulero. for this record, oscar has chosen to go for a more mental and elaborate kind of techno, lowering the bpms and softening his sound.

release number four on upcoming swedish label local talk brings more of that local talk talent, this time we are presenting an ep by swedish producer andreas saag. andreas is no newcomer to the scene, with releases on freerange, a room with a view, rebirth, deepermotions, artizan and tokyo dawn records out and remixes for laurent garnier, joy orbison, portformat and danny howells, he has become a favourite among many djs and producers. his debut for local talk, back to life ep, contains two stunning house jams that aims straight for the dancefloors. the main track is a piano and strings driven house monster that almost sounds like an updated version of >strings of life< but with a deep/tech feel. should be big in the main rooms! on the second track mr saag delivers a house cut that sounds like its straight out of south africa with a raw tech/afro feel. its dark, deep, percussive and 100% house!

nang powerhouse sare havlicek bursts back into the synth-scape once more with the first track from his second nang album. sare is a firm favourite here in nang towers and the mercurial, slovenian dynamo has hardly stopped for breath since his last releases on nang (a well deserved new masters comp, a co-mix credit on beach disco and also as part of the transatlantic disco alliance ep). to remix vibe on you nang have called in the talents of fellow adriatic funkster ilija rudman, who places his seal-of-authority on the sonics and gets brassed up. uk based head of bear funk stevie kotey pairs up with this lightning-fingered-keyboard neighbour manestar to create a cool cross between haddaway & ten city. sare contributes an instrumental and a slowed down, pitch-bent, 115 bpm version. his slyly retiled nothing you can do version jumps forward 4 years to 1985, sounding like a long lost stock-aitken and waterman extended 12 dance cut. stay tuned for sare album number 2 later in the year. weve heard it.. its a goodie.

mr. mageeka makes a welcome return in the wake of >different lekstrix<, the mutated funky banger that caused straight up mayhem on many dancefloors the world over, upon its release via numbers last year. the much-anticipated follow up, penned for release on phuture shock musik, comes in the shape of >vintage malarkey<, which sees the east-londoner offer further next level shenanigans. employing a similar formula as its predecessor, this one is stripped down and quintessentially hypnotic - instantly luring you in with a looped god made me funky - esque groove, over a brisk swinging rythm, whilst occasionally throwing you off-guard through the introduction of angular synths and offbeat claps, as well as an inspired collage of samples that maintains the quirky nature of the production throughout. the single comes backed with >de congo<, a funky conga-laden number, that is enhanced by an addictive fusion of west african guitar licks, kalimba stabs and frisky percussion, though the real icing on the cake being its meandering trumpet hook, altogether coming off like a live high-life jam. early support from the likes of rinse fms scratcha and marcus nasty.

ashley beedle returns to the kat records stable, this time on their 45 offshoot...
first up we have flora purim getting ashley beedles extended edit treatment with the sublime latin-jazz funker >angels<. great vocal hooks, guitar licks and a jazz-funk groove with added disco overtones to boot! if the mizell brothers had been born in rio then this is what it probably would have sounded like.
on the flip we have brian protheroes >pinball<. a lost psychedelic pop classic which got to number 22 in the charts in 1974. a staunch ashley beedle fave with his tripped reworking doing exactly what i says on the tin. dubbed, stretched, spaced out and arranged to perfection. great!

the tribute series continues its search for those essential balearic dj gems with number 5 in the series.
familiar inspiration is given a fresh twist through some tender love and care (rumoured to be the work of leftside wobble), bringing it alive again and ready for those special dance floor moments. cut loud on single-sided heavy vinyl, you can enjoy it on the beach, in the basement, or on any kind of dance floor.

while the first release on wania, busen & paleos >stream of love< (featuring dj sotofetts anthemic overdub-12inchedit) was a rather leftfield affair, dritfett is aimed more directly towards the dancefloor. the label artwork gives a clear clue as to what this release is all about: amongst a number of cryptic messages and shout-outs in norwegian - a tr-909 logo. all the tracks here are based around the 909 - thunderous kickdrums and sharp, hissing hi-hats that cut through the mix. still, theres a broad range of sounds, from head-down, fists-clenched warehouse workouts with an industrial edge, to more melodic tracks with detroit references aplenty. make no mistake though: this is all about the power of the almighty 909. theres no fancy tricks here‚ no ableton-trickery or polished waveforms, just good honest techno with a real raw live feel. this gives the tracks the energy and spontaneity that is sorely missed in many of todays productions. the kind of energy you will find - in abundance - in the house and techno releases of the 90s. the kind of energy that can only be achieved by pressing play on a machine, frenetically twisting knobs and punching buttons while letting the energy of the room decide where to go next.

love it or leave it. stl has done it again. another four tracker of raw electronic beats and mind rumbling grooves. jacking house tracks composed on analog hardware, executed without any static computer arrangements, to keep the true spirit and feeling of each session alive. these sounds are like mad colourful old school gaming, taking the listener on adventures to head, feet and soul in all it s full maniac beauty. number 17 of the something vinyl series is another lovely manifest of an artist mind picture which is not easy to categorysize. surely it won t fit in any style and ear, but those who are already sold to stl s lo-fi kind of sounds will get another dope piece of vinyl in order to make them dance and listen. sweet transmissions from a universe dominated by sound. pressed on a handsome 12inch in very limited quantities !
